From our BTF desk
Human- life gets its meaning by achieving serene pleasure, existing among amusing creations of Almighty. It’s so sad that the world becomes charmless to a certain group of people, who fail to evaluate Almighty’s priceless effortless unique gifts. They don’t know how to celebrate.
The mentioned group of people say good bye to world by killing themselves. World Health Organization (WHO) informs us that every year more than 8 lakh (8,00000) of people lose their lives through suicide.

All deaths are painful. But, suicide is much more painful. The person who kills himself or herself, presents (!?) sorrow beyond measure to his or her relatives, friends and society. Yes, the incident of one’s suicide, tortures the whole society.
This sort of tragic death must be prevented. We have to try our best to make this world lively and pleasant for the depressed ones.

The aim of BTF on Clusters and Contagion in Suicidal Behavior is to bring together eager people in research, prevention and policy, who can share information and expertise in clusters and contagion effects in suicidal tendency globally.
Internationally, there is growing public and professional interest in clusters and contagion in suicidal behavior (fatal and non-fatal). There are indications of increasing clustering and contagion effects in suicidal behavior associated with the rise of digital communication systems. Yet, the research in this area and information on effective response procedures and prevention strategies is limited. Over the last 5 years we have seen an increase in research and prevention initiatives addressing clustering and contagion in suicidal behavior in various countries. However, international comparisons are limited and therefore it is unknown whether the proof on clustering and contagious effects is consistent across countries and cultures. BTF will contribute to progressing research, prevention and policy priorities in this significant and challenging area. In time, BTF will explore possibilities to develop specific projects or actions to be undertaken by designated Task Forces.
- Sharing information on definitions and the methodologies used in detecting clusters and contagion in suicidal behavior.
- Sharing information acquired in research into clusters and contagion in different countries and facilitate comparative international research.
- Sharing information on policy, response procedures and prevention strategies for clusters and contagion in suicidal behavior from different countries and compare effectiveness.
- Increasing awareness of clusters and contagion in suicidal behavior and associated risk-factors. Sharing and transferring expertise across countries when clusters in suicidal behavior emerge.
- Facilitate international collaborative grant applications to progress national and international comparative research, prevention and policy in this area. Act as a sympathetic group for individuals and organizations by seeking information and advice.

Dr. Helal Uddin Ahmed and Dr. Farzana Rahman Dina are working for Suicide prevention:
Identifying and responding to suicide clusters. BTF on Culture and Suicidal Behavior aims to establish a network of people, who pay their attention to cultural issues in suicide-research and prevention.
Although the basic thing is to establish a network of eager people, we hope in time to be able to develop projects on specific sub-themes (e.g. suicide prevention strategies in different cultural settings; spirituality/religion; human/women-rights; gender issues including gender-based violence and domestic/family-violence; suicidal acts in developing and under-developed countries; arts and culture; culturally alert or effective research methods) based on the eagerness of members.
More specifically, BTF will reach the following destinations.
- Sharing resources and information appropriate for the topic of culture and suicidal behavior (including publications and funding opportunities).
- Discussing ideas and providing suggestions around culturally sensitive suicide research and prevention activities.
- Increasing alertness and suggestions for the greater consideration of culture in the understanding of suicidal behavior and the development of suicide prevention strategies.
- Representing a point of reference for individuals and organizations seeking expertise on BTF theme and sub-themes.
- In the long term, BTF will seek financial support to initiate and carry out specific research and prevention projects and organize effective meetings/conferences/workshops.
